Risk is part of everyday life and it is impossible to eliminate all risks, but if you think about health and safety you can decrease those risks.

Example of a Check list

If you have heard from your safety representative of when they are coming to carry out their inspection you might want to hold your own inspection first to identify and problems you can fix before they come, or just in general you might choose to carry on out yourself regularly. So here is a few tips and ideas for areas that need to be checked;

  • Chemicals - when it comes to chemicals you should check that all containers have been clearly labelled with what they contain, what hazards could be caused and what to do in order to prevent these. As well as this you should check for safety data sheets for all chemicals in the building and also that there is training available for employees to be taught the correct way to use the chemicals and also how to act if a problem occurs, e.g. a spillage.

  • The electrics - you should check that all equipment, tool and fittings are always checked regularly and are maintained to the best standard possible. Also you should make sure that equipment that uses live high voltage is only allowed to be used by people that have been authorized to do so.

  • Fire Safety - there are a lot of elements linked with fire safety that will be checked in the inspection, some of these are; whether you carry out regular fire drills, if your fire alarms and smoke detectors are tested weekly, are fire escapes kept clear at all times as well as being clearly sign posted. Other elements that will be checked over are if you provide separate storage for flammable materials, if your bins are regularly emptied with rubbish disposed of correctly and that matched and cigarettes are kept separately.

  • First aid - the inspector will want to look to see if you have a first aid box that is fully equipped and everyone can access it, who and where is your first aider/appointed person and that everyone knows who they are and how to get hold of them, that all accidents, illnesses and near misses are logging into the accident book and that all first aid equipment and the first aid room is kept clean and fully equipped.

  • Lifting and manual handling - they will check that all staff who are involved in moving or lifting have had the right amount of training for manual handling, is there mechanical equipment available to do as many jobs as possible, and has there been sufficient training to use it, are the weighs of loads clearly marked etc.

  • Slips, trips and falls - all floors and stairways should be kept in a good condition that is clear, spills should be dealt with as soon as they happen, has non-slip footwear been provided for free for all employees, you should have fixed handle bars for all staircases.

  • Temperature - the temperature should be comfortable through-out the year allowing your employees to work without being too hot/cold, if staff have to work in a particularly warm area can they take breaks away from this area, within an hour of starting work does the temperature get up to 16oC? For staff working outside during the winter months they should be provided with warm clothing, as well as the facilities to make warm drinks and to warm up. In the summer they should be supplied with cold drinks and breaks in the shade, also they may look to see if you have tried to arrange work in the shade or if you have arranged for them not to be out working it noon when the suns at its warmest.

  • Facilities - there should be enough toilets that are of a good standard, washing facilities with cold and hot water as well as soap and towels available. Sanitary disposal facilities in the women's should be provided, is there a rest area for all staff, do you have a suitable area for pregnant or new mothers to rest, is there a canteen for employees to eat and does each employee have somewhere to keep their belongings that is safe and secure i.e. a locker.
