Safety
This refers to the state of being protected from various types of risk. These risks can be physical, financial, occupational or environmental. However, it is important to note that risk is part of everyday life and as such, it is impossible to eliminate all risks. The aim should be to mitigate risk by putting place a set of safety measures which are both sensible and realistic.
These measures can take the form of an insurance policy, taken out by many people, in order to protect themselves, their possessions or their property: a set of guidelines, prominently displayed in a laboratory, for example, which advises employees as to the safe handling of hazardous materials: seatbelts, airbags and child safety seats in cars:
childproof caps on medicine bottles and ergonomics and workstation design. In the workplace there are specific regulations regarding health and safety that include regular testing and inspections.
These are just a few of the many types of safety measures that can be adopted in order to reduce or prevent harm or danger. These are real world measures, but in the case of technology, for example, the Internet, a whole new set of methods comes into play.
This includes firewalls and anti-virus software to protect against malicious intent, and parental controls and filters which can block inappropriate websites.
